Jumping Through the Hoops of Workers’ Compensation

Injured at Work? We're Here to Help.
"Injured? Call us!" You've likely seen that message on a billboard—but when you're actually injured on the job, the process can feel overwhelming. For many workers, navigating the Washington State workers' compensation system is unfamiliar territory. Questions about what to do next, who to call, and what to expect can add to the stress of an already difficult time.
Washington is a no-fault state, meaning the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) or your self-insured employer may cover work-related injuries or illnesses—regardless of who was at fault. To qualify, the injury must "arise out of and in the course of employment." That means there must be a clear connection between your job duties and the injury or illness.
Common workplace injuries can include:
Lifting injuries
Slips and falls on wet or oily surfaces
Injuries from malfunctioning equipment
Hearing loss from chronic noise exposure
Injured workers may face not only physical limitations at work but also challenges in daily life. Prompt, coordinated care makes a difference.
Tips for Filing a Workers' Compensation Claim:
Seek care immediately. Prompt first aid and medical treatment are key.
Report the injury. Let your employer know and complete an Incident/Accident Report.
Be clear with your provider. Make sure your doctor documents that the injury occurred at work. Accurate initial documentation is crucial.
Stay organized. Keep all paperwork, bills, and receipts related to your claim.
Submit forms on time. Delays can affect your benefits and claim approval.
Follow through with care. Attend all appointments and follow medical instructions. Missed visits may impact your eligibility for benefits.
As an Occupational Medicine physician, I support injured workers by:
Providing evaluation and treatment
Identifying whether the injury is work-related (insurance adjudicates the claim)
Guiding patients through the L&I process
Supporting a safe return to work
Assessing impairment when maximum medical improvement is reached
