Dr. Howlett is great! He has good communication, information, and is very patient with my questions. He is friendly, has a great demeanor and is very refreshing. Thank you!
I recently slipped on a wet floor and broke my right wrist. As an active outdoors person, I enjoy skiing, snowmobiling, jeeping and dirt bike riding so I was concerned about future limitations if healing didn’t go well. I researched the list of orthopedic doctors in my area to find someone that was excellent with patients and a real expert. Dr. Howlett is definitely both! He was so caring and thorough in every step. There were options of treatment that he fully explained and was most concerned that I was comfortable with our plan. The assistants, physician’s assistant and hospital team were also amazing! Every one of them were very caring and fully knowledgeable answering questions about my treatment and rehab. Under the circumstances, it was the most wonderful experience. I’d like to say I heal like a 15 year old as it was impressive, but I think that credit goes to Dr. Howlett as a true expert in orthopedic surgery! Thank you!
Not long ago, I had an accident where I was knocked unconscious, and when I came to, I could see the bones in my arm/elbow area. This is when I met Dr. Howlett at Proliance Orthopedic Associates. Dr. Howlett had great bedside manner from the beginning. When it came to my injury, he didn’t insist on surgery right away, instead, suggested other treatment options to see how the injury could heal on its own without surgery. I really appreciated his conservative approach to treatment, as it is not always necessary to do the most extreme treatment option. He thoroughly explained all of my options, as well as what to expect. He made me feel involved in my care, and always wanted to know how I was doing. I would highly recommend Dr. Howlett because he is a very caring and upbeat yet professional surgeon, who has high concern for his patients and their quality of life.
Dr. John Howlett is awesome!
I’m a traumatic brain injury patient; broken neck along with other injuries including my right hand was injured at the time of I was a passenger in an ATV accident. I was flown from Yakima to Harborview in critical condition. My hand purposely did not receive attention at this time as Harborview provided practical lifesaving measures knowing my hand could be dealt with at a later time providing I lived. Thanks to Harborview, six months later I’m alive, released from my rehab therapy and released to return to work. Harborview repeatedly recommended to me that I see a specialist to evaluate my right hand for recommendations. I wrote down 7 hand questions I had and I obtained an appointment at Orthopedic Northwest in Yakima; this specialist did not even answer one of my questions. Because this happened, my best friend Bob Larson arranged for me to have a new patient appointment with Dr. John Howlett. I was so pleased with this second opinion appointment results that I could not wipe the smile off of my face. I seriously wish my appointment could have been recorded, the Yakima Orthopedic Physician could learn from it. It felt to me that I was a waste of their time in Yakima when I mentioned with my TBI that I’m afraid of anesthesia.
Dr. John Howlett not only had my x-rays up, he enlarged them and reviewed with me in detail of what he was looking at and informed me my hand was still nicely aligned even though the knuckles have a chip, he had me perform multiple hand movements, he answered all of my questions for me, he asked if I had any other questions and provided me a form listing Finger and Wrist Exercises, Velcro and tape that I may use on my right-hand fingers I feel it is needed.
I’m very grateful I was given the opportunity to see Dr. John Howlett, he makes a positive difference!
Joel describes his trigger finger release surgery with Dr. Howlett.
The pain I was having in my hand started in March while I was clipping limbs off of a tree. By April my hand started to swell up so I went to my doctor who first referred me to physical therapy. I attended 9 sessions with the therapist, who in the beginning mentioned that I had carpal tunnel. As soon as he mentioned this, I asked him why I couldn’t have surgery to correct it. The therapist at that point discouraged me from surgery, but after 9 sessions, I was still having shooting pains. This is when I went back to my primary care physician who then referred me to Dr. Howlett at Proliance Orthopedic Associates in Renton. I had surgery with Dr. Howlett for my carpal tunnel in June of 2017 and have had no pain since! I have full function of my hand again when before I couldn’t even write or cut up my food. He was great! I’m so happy with my experience. Along with Dr. Howlett, everyone I encountered at this office was so friendly and helpful. Thank you.
We wanted to write and say thank you for your work on George’s hand injury. It has been 2.5 years since the accident and he has regained 80-85% use of his right hand, including the ability to write and fish. We truly believe you were an answer to our prayers that night in the ER and we remain grateful to you and your staff for the excellent care received. Thank you.

I was referred to Proliance and Dr. Howlett due to a fall I took where I fractured my left arm just below the shoulder. When I first went in to see him I was in quite a bit of pain. The people who worked with me were very conscientious of that and did their best to make me comfortable. Every time I have been there Dr. Howlett and the staff have been gentle, friendly, helpful, informative and kind. They are interested in me as more than a patient but as a person asking about things other than just my broken arm but family, interests and such. I would recommend them to anyone who needs orthopedic care. They are the best.
I recently suffered a bad wrist fracture at work requiring surgery. Dr. Howlett and the surgical team were very professional both prior to, and after my surgery. I had a consultation with Dr. Howlett and his assistant Zach before my surgery which put my mind at ease as I was very apprehensive about my prospects for a full recovery due to the compound damage to my wrist. People like Dr. Howlett are miracle-workers, in my view, who have the knowledge to help our bodies heal right.
I’ve seen Dr. Howlett multiple times for problems with my hands. Dr. Howlett has the most calming personality that really inspires confidence as a patient. He’s great at calming my fears and what I appreciate the most is that he really listens to me. Aside from his amazing bedside manner, he is an excellent surgeon. You can hardly tell where the incision was, and it’s obvious how skilled he is. Proliance Orthopedic Associates is a very well organized office. I’ve never had a long wait time here, and everyone keeps you notified of everything along the way. I know that if I have any other problems with my hands that this is the place I’ll come. Thank you, Dr. Howlett.
I came to Proliance Orthopedic Associates when I was having a trigger finger problem. Everyone here from the nurses to Dr. Howlett was so friendly and helpful. The surgery was quick and easy! The nurses made me feel very comfortable and commented that they loved having me as a patient. The recovery is going well. I am thankful for the staff here and can’t think of anything bad to say.
I broke my wrist while snowboarding, which is how I met Dr. Howlett. I came into the office for a consultation after I had my cast taken off, and Dr. Howlett recommended surgery. Since surgery was the recommendation, I reluctantly agreed. I was nervous for the surgery; however Dr. Howlett took great care of me! A couple weeks after the surgery, I came back and had my cast taken off, and everything worked, just like Dr. Howlett said it would. I highly recommend any of the orthopedists at this practice for anyone who has a broken bone or sports medicine problem. Everyone in the office is very well trained and took care of me very well.
I first met Dr. Howlett in the ER when I broke my shoulder, he was the on-call doctor and I’m very glad that he was. He did surgery on my shoulder and was extremely thorough in explaining the injury as well as what needed to be done to fix it. I came back to see him for my other hand issues including carpal tunnel, trigger finger, as well as another broken shoulder. Dr. Howlett oozes competence and he really knows what he’s doing. The office people are always really friendly as well, and they are always running on time, and sometimes even early! I’m a happy patient of Proliance Orthopedic Associates and Dr. Howlett.
All of the doctors here are wonderful! Dr. Howlett is very charming and soothing. When I came into the office I was worried about my wrist problem, but this excellent group of people make you feel comforted and well taken care of. I would recommend Dr. Howlett to anyone I know, his approach and personality is quite lovely. He makes you feel at the top of his list and very important. I feel very comfortable at Proliance Orthopedic Associates, there is a great sense of “team” at this office.
Dr. Howlett is very sweet and well mannered, I loved having him as my doctor. I’m very happy with the surgery he did, and my recovery is going amazing. I would 200% recommended ANYONE to go see him. I also want to thank all of the people here for being marvelous and very sweet. Scheduling was easy, the office was easy to get to, and I never had to wait. I have no complaints at all, everything was great. Thank you.
My experience was great, from talking with the receptionist to my surgery with Dr. Howlett. I had surgery in both hands and the whole process was very easy. His medical assistant was very nice and explained everything to me which made me feel comfortable. I am very happy that I came here to see Dr. Howlett and I recommend him to everyone!
As a child I had scoliosis and had a steel rod in my back. So as an adult, when I started having numbness down my arms, I came to POA because I thought it was a problem with my back. Some tests were done, and I was diagnosed with Carpel Tunnel. I was nervous when I came in to see Dr. Howlett for my Carpel Tunnel diagnosis, but he was so sweet that my nerves quickly went away. He worked with my schedule to fit me in for surgery on the day that worked best for me, and when I arrived at the Surgery Center I instantly was treated like a queen. Dr. Howlett would come to visit me before and after surgery to check to see how I was doing. I really appreciated his openness and kindness and how he let me know exactly what I should expect during recovery. I am recovering quickly with no issues. He is a sweetheart and so stinking cute! I told him if I was his Mother, I would be working hard to promote my sweet son! I love how he was so kind and always looked me in the eyes; he made me feel like I was his friend, not just a number. My recommendation would be to do one hand at a time, I went onto Amazon and ordered a cast cover so I could shower. Thank you, Dr. Howlett.
My name is Annmari and I am 53. I have been Dr. Howlett’s patient for a little over 3 years now. I broke all three bones in my ankle and luckily Dr. Howlett was in the emergency room when I got there and he did my surgery that night. When I woke up I thought “Wow, how am I going to take care of my kids?” and long story short, surgery went really well, much better than I thought. This was the best experience that I could have had in my condition. After surgery, during recovery, if I had a problem or if I was worried about something, I would call Dr. Howlett and he would comfort me and talk me through it. I had a problem with a medication and called Dr. Howlett right away, he promptly fixed the problem for me. There has always been a quick response when I call and everyone is always so helpful. This accident not only affected me but my whole family. Dr. Howlett was able to answer my families questions as well as my own and explain them in a manner that we could all understand. Now my daughter is inspired to go into the medical field at a young age, due to the great experience I had with Dr. Howlett. Dr. Howlett is a very compassionate person, you can talk to him about anything, he also educates you regarding what is happening. My follow-up care has been just great! Scheduling is always very easy and the whole staff is very professional and warm. When my daughters came with me to my appointment they said, “Mom, it isn’t scary here, everyone is nice.” It’s been a wonderful experience overall and I’m so grateful of Dr. Howlett and the whole staff.
As I nursed my broken elbow I told my friend I needed a doctor who was extremely kind, empathetic, and optimistic. In walked Dr. Howlett with a big smile and a realistic, but encouraging diagnosis and treatment plan. My many questions were answered with respect and I always felt heard and understood. Dr. Howlett and the staff at Proliance were refreshingly friendly, efficient and helpful. Their smiles and kindness make such a difference. My longest office waiting time was 5 minutes!
This is a long overdue “thank you” for my trigger finger release procedure almost a year ago. It was an amazing success, and I am able to play tennis and perform my court reporting duties pain-free! Hope you are doing well and enjoying your summer.
I had a very good experience with my doctor and staff. They are friendly and care about me. I got suggestions and my doubts were cleared when I asked questions. I am healed now. Thanks to Doctor Howlett and staff Sheryl. Mary, one of the cast techs, also took good care of me.
I went in to see the skin doc for something little on my face. Really being vain. When I was talking she noticed a mole on my finger. (I hate this mole, came up after a burn) She said that looks like cancer and took a biopsy right away. It came back cancerous and surgery needed. I tried the Hand surgeons they told me to go to but they kept rescheduling me and wound up never seeing me. Some people told me about Proaliance. I gave them a call and they had me in shortly. They saw the urgency to get this surgery done. It was important to get it all before it got to the bone or blood. My first apt, Dr Howlett took great time and consulted other specialist so by the time I left I felt confident in the next steps. On surgery day, I was checked on by every one who would be dealing with me during surgery. Checking to see if I had any questions or concerns. It went as they said it would. I was surprised when I only had two fingers unwrapped and was wrapped up to my elbow. They did a full skin graph down to the bone on my ring finger and took the graph from the side of my hand. They asked if there were any questions and they took pictures and emailed them to me of the actual process and what was done. The follow up appointments went well. They always asked if I had any other questions and fully understood what was happening. When I was scared the skin graph was lifting, they got me in right away and checked it out. Always asking if I understood and had any questions. Excellent service through it all. Mostly fully recovered now. Scars are mostly healed and some sensations are different but will continue to heal. There is nothing I can not do with my hand.
I fell at home in 2014 and needed a half hip replacement, which sounded interesting. Dr. Howlett was the surgeon, and I found him capable, knowledgeable, and kind. Had the surgery at Valley Medical Center, and was at Wesley Homes for Rehab. The surgery went fine and the treatment by Dr. Howlett and other professionals was excellent, but was glad to be home. I did buy a Senior Safety alarm as I am often by myself. Recently fell, or didn’t realize how close I was to edge of bed, and instead of sitting up and standing up, I rolled off the edge of the bed and came down hard on my knee. After a few days of pain which did not get better, I went to Primary Physician, and she had x-rays done. No fracture but took Tylenol 3, and seems improved, except for old age arthritis. As Bette Davis said “Old Age is not for sissies.” Would not hesitate to see Dr. Howlett again if needed. 84 years old.
Dear Dr. Howlett,
I have had many surgeries, but I have seldom had the care that you took to explain the process I would go through. After the surgery, when I saw the X-rays, and the incision, I could tell that you had done an excellent job. More than that, you reassured me that you would take care of pain needs and you followed through. I have never had such a fast-healing injury, and such confidence in my surgeon. I have confidence that my wrist, which required six pins and a plate, which will be with me for life, will heal to its fullest potential. The time that you took to allay my fear of pain made the whole ordeal much easier. Thank you for your skill, bedside-manner, and professionalism. You are an artist!
